The Unlocking of the Mysteries of Jan Van Eyck and the Arnolfini Portrait
Red Brick AuditoriumSquare Chapel
The Arnolfini portrait, painted by Jan van Eyck in 1434 is one of the world’s most famous paintings. This new lecture unlocks the mysteries of this painting. Who are the people in this sumptuous renaissance living room? Is the woman in green pregnant or hoping for a child? Is this a painting of a wedding or a memorial to a beloved wife? Do the oranges on the window sill and the curious convex mirror have symbolic meanings or are they status symbols showing the wealth of an Italian merchant? The lecture also explores the artistic techniques of the elusive painter Jan van Eyck. The lecture will take you beneath the layers of paint to the artist’s preparatory drawings and you may be surprised to discover what the artist planned and what he added as an afterthought.
