A silent film with live score by Frame Ensemble

In the vast Canadian Arctic, under endless sky and in conditions of unimaginable cold, live Nanook and his family.

Although it usually features any list of the greatest film documentaries, in fact Nanook of the North is a mix of recorded reality and staged drama, depicting the everyday struggle of the Innuit (Eskimo) people to stay alive in the northern reaches of Arctic Quebec.

Flaherty’s empathy with his subjects animates every frame of the film, from scenes of peaceful domesticity to the drama of the seal hunt and the meticulous detail with which he shoots the construction of an igloo.

Frame Ensemble is a quartet of improvising musicians specialising in creating spontaneous soundtracks for silent film.
