Square Chapel collaborates with Magpies Charity in Arts Project to commemorate its 250th Anniversary

Square Chapel teamed up with multi-award winning, local charity, Magpies, to work on a unique Arts Project and are hosting a showcase from 1:30pm-3pm to unveil artwork inspired by characters representative of the era from building’s year of construction in 1772.

We were keen to mark Square Chapel’s special 250th anniversary by connecting and engaging with a local community group, which led us to Magpies. Magpies charity, supports and encourages adults with learning differences to lead fulfilling lives, offering a wide variety of activities and opportunities such as sports, arts, music, media, dance and much more. The collaboration provided a unique opportunity for Magpies members to get creative.

“It’s been great to see how our members and staff have worked together on this project over the past 3 months. The artwork they have created reflects the hard work, creativity, and dedication that they have put into this project. I am really looking forward to displaying this artwork at Square Chapel and showcasing to everyone the amazing work that we do at Magpies”

Alex Edge, Marketing and Communications Officer, Magpies

Members of Magpies have been involved in the whole process from concept to finish. The members contributed ideas to collaboratively creating the initial design, then drawing around members to produce the characters and cut out their shapes, reinforcing the cardboard with paper mâché and painting and decorating to establish the final pieces.

“I’ve loved being involved in this project; it’s been really interesting. It’s been a big group effort – I’ve helped with the painting on both the man and the woman props.”

There will be a showcase event at Square Chapel on the 25th November, from 1:30pm-3pm, with the Magpies’ artwork will be unveiled along with a performance from dance group, the Magpie Movers and a stall with handmade crafts.

Accessibility is at the heart of everything we do at Square Chapel with a passion for engaging with our diverse community. We’re proud to be collaborating with the Magpies on this project and grateful of the hard work and research their service users have put into creating this artwork, Thank-you Magpies!
